I fell for George Town, Penang. The streets are loud with scooters and smells of frying spice. You will find murals on every corner and tiny kopitiams that pour strong coffee. Most travellers enjoy the street food scene. I once followed the smell of char kway teow and ended up eating with locals at a communal table.
The vibe is creative and relaxed. Hot and humid most of the year with quick afternoon rains. For some, the weather will be perfect. For others, it is too sticky.
Cost of living is easy on the wallet. Cheap hawker meals and reasonable rooms. Not as cheap as tiny towns, but way friendlier than big hubs like Singapore. Internet is solid in cafes and co-working spots. Mobile data is fast and cheap.
Things to do are endless. Beaches a short ride away, hill walks, night markets, art walks. There is a small nomad crowd and regular meet ups. Arguably not the best if you crave wilderness, but the mix of culture and convenience feels just right.
