The Ghana Institute of Linguistics Literacy & Bible Translation (GILLBT) is a significant organization dedicated to enhancing literacy and facilitating Bible translation in Ghana. By promoting the use of indigenous languages, GILLBT aims to empower Ghanaians to access education and spiritual content in their mother tongues, directly contributing to cultural preservation and transformative education. GILLBT operates through various projects targeting distinct language groups in Ghana, including the Avatime, Anufo, and Ahanta communities. Each project focuses on developing literacy programs and translating the Bible into local dialects. For instance, the Avatime project, initiated in the 1980s, aims to address the diminishing comprehension of the local Ewe language among its speakers, thereby promoting literacy and fostering a deeper understanding of spiritual texts. Similarly, the Anufo language project seeks to improve literacy among the Anufo people, who predominantly engage in subsistence farming and face a high illiteracy rate. By providing translations of the New Testament and supporting language development efforts, GILLBT endeavors to empower the Anufo with access to religious and educational resources. The Ahanta project is also noteworthy, as it focuses on translating the Bible into a language previously lacking scripted resources. This project emphasizes community engagement through literacy initiatives, training sessions, and the development of educational pamphlets, which not only generate interest in the scriptures but also address critical health issues relevant to the local population. Recently, GILLBT has experienced organizational changes, including the appointment of Rev. Dr. Charles Adu-Twumasi as the new Executive Director. His extensive experience and leadership capabilities are expected to steer GILLBT towards achieving greater visibility, local engagement, and resource mobilization. Furthermore, the institute's proactive approach includes hosting events like the Bible Conference, which aims to equip church leaders with the necessary skills for effective biblical interpretation, underscoring the importance of indigenous languages in making Scripture accessible and impactful.
