I fell in love with Zanzibar fast. Stone Town is a jumble of bright doors, spice stalls and taarab music that floats down the alleys. The island is slow. People call it island time. Hot days, sea breeze and sudden short rains. For some, that is heaven. Others may miss a steady rhythm.
Cost of living is lower than back home. Food, local transport and room rents can be cheap. Tourist spots cost more. Internet is OK in cafes and the small coworking spots. It can be slow and power cuts happen. Mobile data is a good backup.
There is lots to do. I joined a beach volleyball game in Paje at sunset. I also took a spice tour and a dhow trip. Most travellers enjoy snorkeling and wandering Stone Town. There is a small nomad crowd. You can meet creatives in cafes. Arguably not the best choice for heavy deadlines, but great if you want sun, culture and slow days.
