Siem Reap feels alive in a small town way. The temples around town give it a slow, magical vibe. It is hot and humid much of the year. The cool season after November is nice for bike rides. Most travellers enjoy the street food and the night market. For some, the temples at sunrise will change everything. I once read about a group ride for sunrise and joined it. We were a messy, happy pack of bikes and cameras.
Nomads like it because living costs are low. Cheap meals and budget rooms are easy to find. Cafes and guesthouses usually have decent Wi Fi. A few coworking spots host events and meetups. There is a small, friendly expat scene. When I needed a break I took a boat on Tonle Sap or did a cooking class. Arguably not the best place for big-city comforts. But if you want history, calm days, and a real community to plug into, it is a great choice.
