I love Puerto Viejo. Beach and jungle sit side by side. The vibe is slow, reggae on shuffle, food stalls with coconut rice. It is hot and humid most days. Rain comes fast and green things explode after.
Most travellers enjoy the laid back Afro Caribbean culture. For some, this will be amazing. Surf is a daily thing. I once left a coworking spot at noon and joined a beach volley game at Playa Cocles. A Dutch nomad taught me a trick for packing surf wax. Small moments like that stick.
Cost of living is lower than cities but not super cheap. You can rent a room or stay in a hostel. Internet is okay. Cafes and a few coworking spots have decent Wi Fi and 4G backup. Arguably not the best for heavy uploads all day. The community is tight. People share tips, rides to wildlife spots, and weekend boat trips to Gandoca Manzanillo. It feels like a village for creative people.
