Wellington feels like a small city with a big heart. I love its coffee culture and the tangled little streets of Cuba Street. The wind is part of the personality. Some days it is bracing. Other days it makes the sunsets wild. Most travellers enjoy the compact size. You can walk from a tidy cafe to a coworking spot in ten minutes.
Internet is solid. Cafes have plugs and friendly baristas. There are real meetup groups and startup events. I once joined a pop up beach volleyball game at Oriental Bay and ended up swapping work tips with a freelance designer. For nomads, the cost is moderate. Cheaper than Auckland but not the cheapest in New Zealand.
Things to do are endless. Hikes, museums, small concerts, and ferry trips to islands. For some this will be amazing. For others the wind or grey days could be a downer. I still keep going back. It feels like a place you can both work and live a bit.
