Listen, La Réunion surprised me. It feels wild and friendly. Towns are French. Streets smell of curry and vanilla. Mountains rise out of the sea. One day I hiked inside a volcano. Another day I snorkeled a calm lagoon. The weather is warm but changeable. East coast is wet and green. West coast is sunny and dry.
Most travellers enjoy the mix of adventure and slow café life. For digital nomads the internet is solid in towns. You will find 4G and fiber and a few coworking spots in Saint-Denis and Saint-Pierre. Cost of living is not tiny. It is pricier than many islands since it is part of France. For some this will be amazing. Community is small and welcoming. Many locals speak French and Creole. You can join hikes, surf lessons, markets and a sunset beach volleyball game I stumbled into at Boucan Canot. Arguably not the best if you want wild nightlife. But if you like nature and a calm work rhythm this place clicks.
