I fell for Houmt Souk on Djerba fast. White houses. Narrow streets full of chatter. Fresh fish grills and markets where people haggle like it is a sport. It feels slow and warm. Summers are hot and sunny. Winters are soft and mild.
Most travellers enjoy the calm beaches and the old fort. For some, the tiny cafés by the port are amazing places to work. I once watched a sunset volleyball game on Sidi Mahres while answering emails. I met a French nomad in a corner café who swore the coffee and Wi Fi kept him here longer.
Cost of living is low compared with big cities. You can rent simple rooms and eat well for little. Internet is usually good on 4G and in cafés. Coworking is rare so you might work from guesthouses or beach bars. The community is small and friendly. Arguably not the best for big events but perfect if you want slow days, local life, and some sea air while you work.
