Details

Grains & Grams is a Bangkok-based collective of independent designers, artists and makers united by a focus on wood. Presenting itself as both a maker community and a curatorial platform, the collective foregrounds functional art—furniture, lighting, tableware and sculptural objects—that communicate personal narratives and explorative production processes. Individual members work from their own studios but the collective coordinates exhibitions, collaborative projects and commissioned work, offering opportunities for makers to present coherent bodies of work and engage with a broader audience. The collective’s output ranges from collectible, limited-run objects to fully bespoke furniture. All pieces are handmade and may be produced to order with options for hardwood species and finishes; lead times vary according to complexity and quantity. Grains & Grams also accepts commissions for custom works, projects and exhibitions, and can provide an itinerary of available pieces upon request (contact: nanu@republicnanu.net). Curatorial activity is a core strand of the collective’s practice. Exhibitions aim to position craft within everyday environments and to provoke reflection through material and process. Notable exhibition projects include “12 Camels” (Bangkok Design Week 2022 and a second edition at Kalm Village in Chiang Mai), an experimental collaboration in which 12 interdisciplinary teams each contributed stool components that were randomly reassigned and completed—an inquiry into contingency, authorship and generosity. “Never Was Normal” (September 2020) explored shifting notions of normality under emergency conditions, while “Transmigration” (Bangkok Design Week 2020) highlighted the reuse and reclamation of timber, transforming unwanted or found wood into renewed form and purpose. Grains & Grams has also undertaken site- and material-specific commissions, such as the British Embassy project (2020–2021), which repurposed rain tree timber sourced from the former ambassador’s residence into commemorative artworks. Collective members and participating studios cited across projects include Nanu Youttananukorn, Nakornsang Studio, Nucharin W, Meanwhile Woodwork, o-d-a, Phisanu Numsiriyothin and others, reflecting a cross-disciplinary pool of architects, designers, craftsmen and makers. Overall, the collective presents a program that combines production of functional wooden objects, tailored bespoke services for clients, and curatorial projects that interrogate material life, chance operations and the role of craft in everyday space.
