Details

Daybreak Cohousing, established in 2009, is a multigenerational community located in the Overlook neighborhood of Portland, Oregon. This 30-unit development prides itself on fostering connection and collaboration among its residents through shared meals, workdays, and community events. The layout features four multi-story buildings, including a large Common House, all designed with a focus on sustainability and community engagement. The campus encompasses two-thirds of an acre and prominently features a 50-year-old silver maple, which serves as a central gathering point. Each residential unit, ranging from 1 to 3 bedrooms and 650 to 1,200 square feet, is connected by outdoor walkways promoting interaction among residents. The complex offers a rich array of communal amenities, including a kitchen equipped with commercial appliances, a media room, a yoga space, and beautifully maintained gardens. All utilities, including internet, are included in the homeowners’ association (HOA) dues, which range from $410 to $800 per month depending on unit size. The community operates a self-managed condominium complex with established rules for rentals and ongoing residents' engagement in community management. The principles guiding Daybreak Cohousing emphasize connection, collaboration, environmental stewardship, and mutual accountability. Residents are encouraged to actively participate in community life through various activities and team roles, contributing to the social fabric and maintenance of the community’s values. Sustainable living is prioritized; features such as energy-efficient construction, high-quality insulation, and on-site stormwater management have been integrated throughout the development. Daybreak Cohousing emerged from a vision initiated in the early 2000s by a group of founders who sought to create a space that aligned with their environmental and social values. Despite facing challenges such as financial hardships and construction defects, the community continues to thrive and adapt, welcoming new members and promoting a culture of shared responsibility and sustainability. As the community matures, Daybreak remains committed to enhancing the well-being of its residents and the surrounding neighborhood through intentional living and collaboration.
