Details
Sasona Cooperative, established in June 2002 in Austin, Texas, functions as a part of a non-profit community housing organization known as CHEA. It emerged from the collaborative efforts of alumni from student cooperatives and has since become affiliated with NASCO Properties, promoting cooperative living across various states. The cooperative follows the Rochdale Principles, emphasizing an open and diverse community where individuals from varied backgrounds and lifestyles are welcomed.
The membership process at Sasona is designed to be inclusive, requiring prospective members to attend two house meetings before acceptance. This approach not only allows candidates to familiarize themselves with the cooperative environment but also helps assess their compatibility with the community norms. Decision-making within the house is democratic, with members participating in regular meetings to discuss policies, set rent rates, and decide on house operations.
Members of Sasona enjoy numerous amenities that enhance communal living, including daily home-cooked meals, a stocked kitchen, covered utilities, internet access, and free laundry facilities. The cooperative's prime location near public transportation, restaurants, a movie theater, and recreational areas—such as the Green Belt and Barton Springs—further enriches the living experience. Social interactions within the Sasona community are fostered through shared meals, movie nights, and various group activities, creating a vibrant and engaging living atmosphere.
For those interested in joining this cooperative, inquiries can be directed to their membership coordinator via email. Sasona presents a model of cooperative living that not only prioritizes community values and member involvement but also offers valuable conveniences and a location that supports a dynamic lifestyle.
