Details
L'Échappée is a co-housing initiative located in Brussels, founded in 2015 and fully operational since 2017. The project consists of 18 living units occupied by a diverse group of 30 adults aged 30 to 70 years and 18 children, all motivated by collective dynamics, sustainability, and community engagement. The co-housing strives to offer an alternative living environment that balances private and shared spaces while prioritizing social connections and ecological concerns. Situated in Laeken, near public transport and green spaces, L'Échappée fosters a strong sense of community.
The principles of solidarity, respect, conviviality, and ecological responsibility underpin the project, facilitating a fulfilling quality of life for all residents. Key features include a shared garden, multipurpose common room, bicycle shed, workshop, and laundry facilities. The living units were uniquely crafted based on resident preferences, allowing for individual customization within a framework of energy-efficient and economically viable construction. Support from external experts and architects contributed to the planning and realization of these eco-friendly homes.
Community interaction is a vital aspect of life at L'Échappée. Residents engage in regular communal activities, including monthly working gatherings called "Mingas," where they collaboratively work on communal areas and share meals, thereby strengthening social ties. The co-housing initiative emphasizes integration with the surrounding community, participating in local projects and opening its doors for various workshops and gatherings. With established governance structures, including monthly assemblies for decision-making and conflict resolution, L'Échappée exemplifies a model of collaborative living that prioritizes both individual autonomy and collective well-being.
For those interested in co-living and community-oriented spaces, L'Échappée presents a promising case study of how collective housing can address contemporary social, environmental, and economic challenges while enhancing the quality of life through shared values and mutual support.
