Jackson Place Cohousing (JPC) is an established urban community located near downtown Seattle, designed to foster a vibrant, multi-generational living environment. Built in 2001, JPC comprises 27 homes, accommodating approximately forty adults and twenty children, ranging from infants to residents in their 80s. The community emphasizes mutual respect, cooperation, and shared responsibilities among residents, with a commitment to sustainability through eco-friendly practices and resource-sharing. The physical layout of JPC is centered around a communal space, facilitating social interactions and cooperation among residents. This design includes a Common House, which features essential amenities such as a community kitchen, dining hall, laundry facilities, and areas for recreation and meetings. Each unit is a privately owned condominium, with the land held in common, allowing residents to have both private and communal experiences. The community prioritizes consensus decision-making, with all residents participating in the governance and upkeep of their environment, ensuring that every voice is valued. Jackson Place Cohousing also places significant importance on the inclusion of children and the diversity of perspectives among residents. Communal gatherings are encouraged for celebrations and fostering connections, while also respecting individual needs for privacy. JPC actively engages with the surrounding neighborhood, aiming to contribute positively to the urban environment and community well-being.
