Details
Base Gaia represents Milan's inaugural co-housing initiative, established in 2015 by a group of ten families aiming to create a sustainable and participatory living environment. The project commenced in June 2014 when the founding families selected and secured a plot of land. Their commitment to autonomy led them to directly collaborate with professionals for the design and development of their living spaces, marking the foundation of Base Gaia as a cooperative housing society.
Occupying a six-story building, Base Gaia features individual family housing units alongside over 200 square meters of common areas, which include a communal living space, coworking facilities, guest accommodations, and a laundry room. These shared spaces not only support residents but also host community events, fostering engagement with the surrounding neighborhood. The community emphasizes values such as participation, sustainability, affordability, solidarity, and social interaction, aiming to cultivate a strong sense of civic responsibility and collective identity.
Base Gaia is designed as an open and inclusive community that actively participates in local dialogues about urban transformation and citizen engagement. The residents regularly organize programs to share knowledge, promote cultural activities, and encourage active citizenship, reflecting their commitment to both individual and communal growth. This model of intentional living emphasizes collaboration, shared resources, and sustainable practices, illustrating a shift towards a more connected and supportive urban lifestyle.
