Bishkek surprised me. The city feels open and dusty. Wide Soviet streets. Green parks. Cold winters and hot summers. Mountains sit close. You can hike after breakfast. I once joined a sunset hike with people I met at a cafe. It felt easy to do.
Most travellers enjoy the cheap life here. Rent and food cost much less than in Europe. Cafes are affordable and tasty. Internet is mostly reliable. 4G is strong and many cafes and coworking spots have decent Wi Fi. For some, speeds can be hit or miss in older buildings.
Things to do are simple and fun. Walk Osh Bazaar, drink tea in a chaikhana, explore Ala Archa, or take a weekend to Issyk Kul. There is a small nomad and expat crowd. People post meetups on Telegram and Facebook. Locals speak Russian and Kyrgyz and are friendly to strangers. Arguably not the flashiest city. But if you want a low cost base with real mountains and a chill community, Bishkek is worth a try.
