Bilbao surprised me. It feels like a small city that grew up bold. Old brick factories sit beside shiny art museums. People love food here. Pintxos bars are loud and fun. The weather is mild and often cloudy. Summers stay cool. Winters bring rain. For sun chasers, that might not be ideal.
Cost wise it is easier on the wallet than Madrid or Barcelona. Not dirt cheap, but you can live well without breaking the bank. Internet is solid. I found good cafes with fast Wi Fi and a few friendly coworking spots. Most travellers enjoy the mix of work and play here.
Things to do are endless. Walk the river. Visit the Guggenheim. Take quick trips to surf beaches like Sopelana. I read about beach volleyball there and tried it after a workday. It was buzzing and felt real. The nomad scene is small but warm. For some, this will be amazing. For others, Bilbao may feel a bit grey but honest.
